South Sudanese Youth Launch Book and Album in Nairobi

A youth organization, South Sudan Artists Association (SSAA) yesterday launched an album and book at Charter Hall, Nairobi Kenya.


NAIROBI, June 20, (Gurtong) –  SSAA has been an active youth organization which comprises of musicians and other artists like writers, poets and fine artists. It is aimed at giving the youth an opportunity to participate towards the reconstruction of South Sudan. One such event is the first ever Miss Malaika South Sudan which was also held here in Nairobi with subsequent ones now being held in Juba.

The Saturday even however was concentrated on the program of emphasizing on refugee development and awareness creation on refuge and refugee.

The event which commenced at 9pm was well attended by Representatives of organizations, Sudan Embassy, Ambassador Majok Guandong and his team, Government of Southern Sudan officials, other nationalities and largely the Sudanese youth.

It was graced by both Sudanese artist like Lam, Manasseh, Mary Boyoi, Markshow, Black Venom and the famous South Sudanese song bird, Nyapal. Also present were some of East Africa’s finest like the Kenyan Wyre, and the Tanzanian Queen of music, Ray C, not forgetting the Nubian, Refigah who was the MC.

With rocking performances, all these artists brought the crowed o their feet, with Nyapal stealing the show.

There were also a number of speeches from government of Southern Sudan Representatives and other invited guests. Mr. Majur Mayor Machar, the current acting chairman for the South Sudan Reconstruction Commission spoke on behalf of the Government of Southern Sudan.

 He said “We in the Southern Sudan Government are proud of our youth,  Arts is part of reconstruction is music is life”.

Another speaker, the National Director, President’s Award Program (Kenya), Mr. Edwin Otieno also commented the South Sudanese youth for a job well done saying that South Sudanese are the soul of Africa, owing to a conflict well borne and won. Mr. Otieno also promised that he would help to get the award to south Sudan in order to promote the youth to have a say in their destiny.

Mr. Otieno in his final remarks commented the youths of Southern Sudan, saying that they have never posed a law problem to the people of Kenya.

The book, which is titled ‘How Long” was finally launched at about 2 am by the writer Himself, Evans Maende. Mr. Maende whos is also the vice chairperson of SSAA is not new to the writing scene. He launched his book, “Child Soldier” in 2006. Mr. Maende is a Kenyan South Sudanese with a hart for the South Sudanese community, hence his involvement in all the activities of SSAA.

The album which also bears the same name as the book was also launched shortly and is being done by the group talented young Sudanese Musicians, Garang and Cuzos Clan.

Other performances followed thereafter after which people left at about 3 am while the young tags and the young at heart danced the night away till dawn.

It was yet another wonderful cultural event that brought the Sudanese Community together to celebrate each other.
