Lt. Gen Hoth Mai
While we the entire people of South Sudan are mourning the death of our Dear Beloved Brother and Hero Dr. Samson Lukare Kwaje, the enemies of peace might be happy and are planning something to do away with our CPA.  Our Message to them is “Make No Mistake” our SPLA Gallant Forces Are Not Sleeping; they are ready for any eventualities, says Lt. Gen. James Hoth Mai, SPLA Chief of General Staff

In his address to the people of South Sudan and the peace loving people of the Sudan as well as the entire marginalized people of the Sudan, on the fifth Martyrs day which took place in Juba on Friday, July 30, Lt. Gen. James Hoth Mai is repeating the same massage again and again; brief and straight to the point and assuring the people of South Sudan by saying “The SPLA soldiers you saw marching in front of you; will always stand guard, ready to sacrifice their lives in order for you and the coming generations to enjoy lasting peace; freedom and prosperity. We in the SPLA are charged with defending you, Interim Constitution of Southern Sudan, sovereignty and territorial integrity of southern Sudan.  This mission is an integral part of our overall vision and we are prepared to execute it at any cost”.

SPEECH OF THE SPLA CHIEF OF GENERAL STAFF ON MARTYRS’ DAY JULY 30th, 2010, Lt. Gen. James Hoth Mai

SPLA Soldiers
Your Excellency, Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit, The First Vice President of the Republic of the Sudan, President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Chairman of the SPLM and Commander-In-Chief of the SPLA; Your Excellency Dr. Riek Machar Teny, Vice President of the Government of Southern Sudan; Honourable Daniel Awet Akot, Deputy Speaker of Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA); Your Excellencies, Ministers of GONU, GOSS Presidential Advisors, Your Excellencies, Ministers of GOSS, Major General Clement Wani Konga, Governor of Central Equatoria, Honorable Members of SSLA, The rest of Protocol in our Government is observed, Your Excellencies, Head of Diplomatic Missions, UN Agencies, International NGOs, My comrades in arms,
Distinguished guest, ladies and Gentlemen,

I am greatly honoured to stand before you today as we pay our special tributes to men and women who shed their blood for our freedom during Anya-Nya1 war; up to the present liberation struggle waged by the SPLM / A.

For those of us who took part in the armed struggle during the 21 years of civil war in our country, we shared sad memories of our fallen heroes and heroines. For those of us who have seen our comrades fall in the battlefield, those of us who nursed the wounds of our fallen comrades and those of us who helplessly watched our comrades perish, this day reminds us of those brave men and women who gave their lives in order for us to be where we are today. We honour all fallen heroes and heroines and we salute them. We are proud of our wounded Heroes and heroines for their great sacrifices they had made with the parts of their bodies.

As Always Your Army, The SPLA Shall Not Let You Down  "We Shall and Will Always Win"

We also acknowledged the contributions of our civilian compatriots who have also contributed their live-stock and agricultural crops during the liberation war.  We sincerely appreciate and thank all the people of the New Sudan, for standing and supporting the SPLA during those difficult days up to now, and also for taking care of our orphans, widows and the old age comrades.

For those of us who have seen their loved ones blasted by aerial bombardments and landmines, those who helplessly watched thousands of the marginalised people starve to death, those who have seen their fellow citizens succumb to diseases as a result of the policies of the repressive regimes in Khartoum, today is the day we must reflect on those bitter memories.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As we can recall five years ago, today the 30th of July, is the day when we lost the great martyr, our late leader and Commander-In-Chief, Gen. Dr. John Garang de Mabior.  The sad news of his tragic death in the helicopter crash devastated each and every one of us and was about to plunged this country to another civil war.  But because of our full commitment to the CPA, we said that the best way to revenge Gen. Dr. John Garang de Mabior and the 2.5 million other martyrs who died before him, was not through the use of force. Instead, we chose peace with dignity and stability, the very same objectives our dear comrades died for. I would wish to express my heartfelt gratitude and thank to Mama Rebecca Nyan-Deng De Mabior for her brave stand during those moments when we lost our great leader Dr. John Garang de Mabior; Mama Rebecca Nyan-Deng enabled us to overcome that great shock.  We shall always stand by you.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Militarily, the SPLA is the guardian of comprehensive peace agreement (CPA). The CPA did not come on a silver plate; it was signed with the blood of 2.5 million martyrs who we are honouring today. The SPLA soldiers you saw marching in front of you will always stand guard, ready to sacrifice their lives in order for you and the coming generations to enjoy lasting peace; freedom and prosperity. We in the SPLA are charged with defending you, Interim Constitution of Southern Sudan, sovereignty and territorial integrity of southern Sudan.  This mission is an integral part of our overall vision and we are prepared to execute it at any cost.

Lt. Gen. James Hoth Mai also said we will deal with those who incite communal conflicts and supply arms to our civil population.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
As you may be aware the frequent tribal conflicts we witnessed in southern Sudan are fuelled by those who wish us bad luck and who work day and night to divide us in their failed attempt to deviate the attention of our people from our ultimate goal: self-determination! They supply money and smuggle in weapons to our people so that we kill one another. They instigate tribal conflicts and supply weapons to militias in order to destabilize us. But I assure you all that these men and women you see in uniforms are not sleeping either.  So far we have managed to collect around 30,000 weapons from the hands of armed civil population and the disarmament exercise is still ongoing. We will deal with those who incite communal conflicts and supply arms to our civil population.

SPLA Soldiers in parade
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The political scars and wounds left by the April 2010 general elections requires our politicians to reconcile and forge a better way forward as we are heading towards referendum.  The two civil wars have claimed enough blood. We cannot afford to lose even a single life in the hands of a fellow southerner.  Fellow citizens and comrades in arms, let each of us promise to bury the hatchet, put aside our differences and walk together to our final march to freedom.  Let us promise to make peace with brothers and sisters, neighbours other tribes and political nemeses.

Lastly but not the least, Ladies and Gentlemen,
We are now entering the most critical time in the history of our struggle all Southerners with exception of few fought the war that was ended with the signing of the CPA differently in different time; but right now our fate will not be decided by a few people. All of us will determine our future in the upcoming referendum.  SPLA will respect your choice. However, we will deter anyone who will undermine or dishonour it.  Our military might during the war was known and I assure you that we are now better and better than before!

As always your army, the SPLA shall not let you down! We Shall and Will Always Win!

Long live the legacy of Dr. John Garang De Mabior!
Long live the memory of our fallen heroes and heroines!
Long live the great people of Southern Sudan!
Aluta Continua!
Victory is near and Certain!
SPLA Oyee!

Thank you all for listening
