WASHINGTON DC, USA, 17 September 2010 – Addressing more than one thousand people from different walks of life including world leaders at the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington DC in his second day of visit to the United States of America, President Kiir said: “The timing of the referendum is sacrosanct.  The vote must happen on time on January 9th, 2011, and is not contingent on the conclusion of any post-referendum negotiations, including over the border, as the CPA itself makes it clear”.

On the same note, President Kiir thanked the Government and the people of the United States and said: “I am happy to mention to you that the US engagement has stepped up in recent months, both in Juba and Khartoum.  We very much welcome this and are very grateful for the efforts exerted by the Obama administration to assist the parties fulfill their obligations to the CPA”.

“In this context, we welcome Ambassador Princeton Lyman’s appointment to support the negotiation process, and we look forward to – and indeed are already enjoying - working with him closely”, he added.
