South Sudanese in Australia Register for January Vote

Nine thousand four hundred and sixty four South Sudanese in Australia have registered as voters for the January 9, 2011 Southern Sudan referendum.

MELBOURNE, Australia, 22 December 2010 (Gurtong) - Australia has five polling centers in five different states or territories although three states or territories have not been allocated voting centers, a situation that made some individuals to register in the states with registration centres.

In the registration figures, Melbourne in the state of Victoria has 4,115 voters, Sydney  in New South Wales has 1,838 registered voters while Brisbane in Queensland has 1,674 voters.

The South Sudan Referendum Commission’s country representative David Gatwech said Perth in Western Australia has 1,532 registered voters and Canberra in the capital territory has 305 registered voters, bringing the total to 9, 464 voters in Australia.

In related news, most South Sudanese residing in Australia have travelled home to participate in the historic vote.

Most, some of who are still traveling have registered in South Sudan for the vote that might see the birth of Africa’s newest state.
