WAU, 17, February 2011 (Gurtong) – In a communiqué issued on the final day of the party’s Political Bureau’s first extraordinary meeting in Juba, the name of the new country was given as the Republic of South Sudan.
The 4-day meeting that ended Wednesday also adopted a proposal of the flag and currency of the new state.
SPLM Secretary- General Pagan Amum told reporters that the proposals will be discussed with other South Sudanese political parties before being presented to the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly.
Meanwhile, all political parties in South Sudan have unanimously endorsed the new name of Africa’s newest state.
Leaders from the 24 political parties in South Sudan endorsed the name at a roundtable held in Juba yesterday.
According to reports by the Sudan Catholic Radio Network, the GoSS Vice President Dr Riek Machar said the meeting also deliberated on adoption of the new flag as well as a new currency.
They also discussed the inclusion of the opposition parties in the technical committee to review the Interim Constitution of South Sudan.
Most South Sudanese interviewed by Gurtong welcomed the new developments, saying their new country was already taking shape after the successful referendum.
