Press Release 12 April 2011
The Joint Donors confirm their support for the development of South Sudan
The Joint Donor Partners (Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom) held their annual meeting in Juba on 11 and 12 April 2011 and discussed their individual and joint commitments to support the development of South Sudan. They welcomed the efforts of the Government to prepare a South Sudan Development Plan as a basis for development cooperation over the next three years and agreed to strengthen their support for governance, anti-corruption efforts, civil society, gender, economic growth and the provision of basic services.
The meeting of the senior representatives confirmed that they want to see better coordination among all the donors under the leadership of the Government of South Sudan. “The donor landscape is changing, “ explains Michael Elmquist, Head of the Joint Donor Team in Juba, “with new mandates for the World Bank, the European Union and the UN, in addition to the Joint Donor Partners and other major donors such as USAid, Japan, and China, and many smaller donors, so the need for coordination will be greater than ever before.”
The senior representatives also function as supervisors for the Joint Donor Team in Juba and used the occasion of their meeting to review the structure of the team and agree on the recruitment of new staff. The Joint Donor Team supports the development efforts of the six partner countries and the Government of Southern Sudan by providing expertise in the areas of public financial management, governance, civil society, oversight over of multi-donor funds (including the Capacity Building Trust Fund), capacity building, and basic services.
