Abyei: Press Release by SPLM Finland Chapter

Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM)

FINLAND CHAPTER
Press Release
Date: 27.5.2011

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement Finland Chapter (SPLM-Finland) and the people of
South Sudan in Finland are gravely concern about the recent violence in Abyei Area, which
escalated since the beginning of May 2011 between the two Parties to the Comprehensive
Peace Agreement (CPA) of 2005 and now taking its intensity leading to serious humanitarian
disaster.

These unfortunate developments come at a crucial time of hope building towards a political
settlement of the Abyei issues, including the resolution of all other CPA remaining issues as well
as the post‐referendum matters, in view of the impending independence of South Sudan due to
be announce on 9th July 2011.

At this delicate time, the SPLM Finland Chapter condemns the act, would like to urge all the
Parties specially the NCP to immediately withdraw all the unauthorized forces from the Abyei,
in compliance with the CPA Agreement, and to restrain from any provocative actions. In that
line, the SPLM Finland chapter and the people of South Sudan here would like to request the
United Nations Mission in the Sudan (UNMIS) and other international bodies such as (IGAD) to
continue facilitating and exercise their powers towards peaceful solution.

At this point, we call upon both Parties to resume the dialogue towards a political settlement
on Abyei by returning to the negotiating table with the facilitation of the African Union
High‐Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP), under the leadership of former South African
president Thabo Mbeki. Furthermore, the SPLM Finland chapter reminds the Parties of their
common responsibility to protect the civilian population affected by this current conflict and to
ensure their well‐being.
