TORIT, 24th June, 2011 [Gurtong] – World Refugee Day celebrations are currently underway in Eastern Equatoria State at the State capital Torit following postponement from June 20th, 2011. The UNHCR Community Service Associate Mr. Tobias Lomuya Gabriel announced on Wednesday.

Lomuya clarified that this year’s theme of the World Refugee Day is a campaign aiming at putting individual refugees in focus and to motivate them through joint efforts with the host communities in building their lives after long effects on the civil war.

This year’s theme: “Real People, Real Needs"

He added that this year’s campaign is designed to reflect UNHCR’s goal in order to strengthen global protection, aiming at raising awareness of refugee issues by focusing on people displaced around the world and calling for tolerance, respect and compassion.

Lomuya further told the press at Radio Emmanuel premises where he delivered a radio announcement message that the event also celebrates progresses achieved since the signing of Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

The occasion is to be graced by various government officials with the State Governor being the guest of honour among other UNHCR partners. Other invitees include all the State institutions, cultural dancers expected to entertain the gathering.

Lomuya told the press that it was exceptional for the State to postpone the celebrations due to the democracy conference that was held between 20th and 21st June with all top Government officials including the State Governor attending.
