GURTONG -Juba, 26 Aug 2011 – The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General (SRSG), Hilde F. Johnson today welcomed the formation of a new Government of the Republic of South Sudan. “I welcome the formation of the new Government today. And I want to pledge the full support of UNMISS in working with President Salva Kiir Mayardit and his new cabinet. This new Government faces huge challenges in building Africa’s newest nation. The needs of the people are great. The UN will have a vital role in supporting this Government.”
SRSG Johnson continued to say: “We want to work closely together with the new Government to consolidate peace and stability. Only from a platform of peace can development progress follow. The road ahead will not be easy but I am confident that with the commitment of the new Government we can and will build a better future for all peoples of South Sudan.”
The United Nations’ newest member state gained its independence following a successful referendum in January 2011. Since independence on 9 July South Sudan has had a caretaker Government in place led by President Salva Kiir Mayardit
