The South Sudanese Vice President Dr. Riek Machar yesterday called on all citizens to stop vicious cycle of violence and to embrace peaceful-co-existence. Machar spoke during the commemoration of the World Peace Day convened at Nyakuron cultural centre in Juba.

JUBA, 22nd September 2011 [Gurtong] – The South Sudanese Vice President Dr. Riek Machar yesterday called on all citizens to stop vicious cycle of violence and to embrace peaceful-co-existence. Machar spoke during the commemoration of the World Peace Day convened at Nyakuron cultural centre in Juba.

Taking place for the first time in the Republic of South Sudan, the commemoration was characterized with several speeches advocating for peaceful re-construction of the new fledgling nation of South Sudan.

The commemoration is also coinciding with the UN General meeting currently underway in New York. The occasion’s focal persons were drawn from different institutions; government, civil society, the UN, African Union and school children mostly youths.

This year’s theme for celebration was, “make your voice heard,” the function was organized by the United Mission in South Sudan in partnership with Pact Sudan and United Kingdom Aid for International Development, UKaid.

Among the key speakers were the Chairperson of the South Sudan Peace Commission, Peter Gwang, the AU Ambassador-Nakaha Stanyslas and the South Sudan Vice President, Dr Riek Machar.

In his key remarks to the public, ambassador Nakaha urged for peaceful co-existence between South and North Sudan, forging peaceful and diplomatic completion of the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, (CPA).

He also urged for rebels who are fire arms against the South Sudan government to cooperate to the amnesty granted by President Kiir during the proclamation of the country’s long-yearned independence.

He added that, “I would like to appeal to the various rebel leaders who have not yet joined the system to come and openly engage in a negotiated settlement of whatever grievances they may have instead of shedding the blood of their innocent brothers.”

The Republic of South Sudan (RSS) Vice President Dr. Riek Machar who was also the guest of honour said that the commemoration of the World Peace day was significant in the new Republic while re-counting the long gone decades they yearned for peace.
