South Sudan Code +211 Goes Live

The country code "+211" for the Republic of South Sudan went live on Saturday, 1st October, 2011, two months ahead of the 15th December 2011 set deadline for the switchover.

JUBA, 3 October 2011 – The country code "+211" for the Republic of South Sudan went live on Saturday, 1st October, 2011, two months ahead of the 15th December 2011 set deadline for the switchover.

The Minister for Telecommunication & Postal Services Hon. Maj. Gen. Madut Biar Yel was the guest of honour during the launching occasion of the new country code, as launched by GEMTEL (a mobile communications company operating in South Sudan), at the Quality Hotel in Juba.

On Saturday Mr. George Garang, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Information attended the a similar launch of the South Sudan new country code, +211 replacing the Sudan code +249 by Zain mobile communications company in Juba.

Mr. George Garang said that, Zain’s move to use the Country’s new code is part of the efforts to intensify South Sudan’s identity.
