JUBA, South Sudan - On October 13, 2011, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director in South Sudan, Kevin J. Mullaly will officially launch the U.S. government-funded Jonglei Food Security Program (JFSP) in Bor, capital of Jonglei State in South Sudan.
Through this program, USAID, in partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and its implementing partners Save the Children and Joint Aid Management, will support communities and the government of South Sudan to enable them to address the root causes of food insecurity throughout Jonglei State.
This U.S. government-funded program, valued at approximately $53 million, aims to improve the food security situation of target populations in Jonglei State, one of the most food insecure states in South Sudan. The program will strengthen household and community resiliency to food security shocks; increase crop and livestock productivity; and help agro-pastoralists and pastoralists increase their income by building their production capacity and business skills.
The program will help meet the needs of 149,661 chronically and temporarily food insecure households in Akobo, Ayod, Bor, Nyirol, Pibor, Pochalla, Twic East and Wuror in Jonglei State.
Program activities are scheduled to begin this month and continue for three years.
The U.S. government is the world’s largest provider of food aid, providing over 2.1 million tons of food, valued at more than 2.1 billion, in fiscal year 2010, benefitting over 53 million people in 48 countries.
