JUBA, 04 November 2011 [Gurtong] - The South Sudanese Minister of Youths and Sports Cirino Hiteng told the press at Juba Airport upon arrival from France that South Sudan was officially admitted into UNESCO on 29 October 2011.
He said South Sudan will be committed to co-operate with the organisation in fulfilling her obligation as a signatory to UNESCO.
“Joining UNESCO is a positive step as it will assist the country in its efforts to minimise some of the development challenges. Moreover, the government stands to benefit from the documentation of South Sudan’s history”, said the Minister.
South Sudan gained independence on 9 July 2011 and the new nation faces a number of challenges that have hampered development, forcing it to reach out for international support.
The country is already a member of the United Nations and the African Union among other international bodies.
