WAU, 14th December 2011 [Gurtong] - The South Sudan campaign against poliomyelitis for 2011 has reached the Western Bahr el Ghazal State (WBGS) capital Wau.

This is the last poliomyelitis campaign in Wau and the last round in most States in South Sudan. It was officially launched on Monday in Marail Ajith, a small town 5 miles northward of Wau by the Eradication Immuninazation Programm (EPI) officials, graced by the Jur River County Commissioner, Mr. Molana Akol Rock.

“This is the fourth and last campaign for 2011 polio vaccination to children bellow the age of 5 in the Country particularly in WBGS,” Eugino Longar the EPI Director told Gurtong.

“The campaign will take place from the 13th – 16th December and will target over 132 children across three Counties in the State,” Eugino said.

He clarified that their officers were administering polio vaccinations and Vitamin (A) to the children to help them against being paralyzed. “Our immunization against polio department in Wau guarantees the success to accomplish this campaign with diligence. However our credibility to vaccinate every child is hindered by some families who prevent their children due to literacy and ignorance,” Eugino was disappointed.

The high fuel prices in Wau are also affecting their service delivery schedules to the local community at par distance across the State but he assured that the efforts will be made.

Eugino urged the State government officials to use their political influence to convince the local community to take advantage of the vaccinations. “Let our leaders take their time to go out to their people and advice them on the benefit of this program,” he reiterated.
