BENTIU, 1st January 2011 [Gurtong] - The citizens of Unity State celebrated the 2011 Christmas holiday peacefully despite the fear that the Sudanese government would re-launch its aerial bombardment at the border areas of Jau and Yadi where massive destruction has already been caused by the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF).

While speaking to a mass gathering, the Governor of Unity State Hon. Taban Deng said that, “our police have done a good job by deploying more personnel to guard various Counties hence facilitating the peaceful and happy holidays in the State."

Deng also pointed out that, “South Sudan will not develop unless we commit ourselves to work hard.”

The State citizens have urged the Government of South Sudan to protect them of any attacks from Sudan.

“We are very pleased by the role played by our police department who managed to take control of the situation and declared war against criminal gangs who are trying to adopt the western culture of aggression,” said one of the church elders.

Four days prior to Christmas Day, the Unity State police were deployed to various strategic points to protect civilians both from internal and external attacks.
