RUMBEK, 8th January 2012 [Gurtong] - The Lakes State Parliament Speaker John Marik Makur has lifted the immunity of Mr. Zechariah Puoric Matuong, a Member of Parliament (MP) representing Malek constituency in Rumbek Central County over allegations of child abduction in Uganda.

The speaker confirmed that lifting of his immunity as a parliamentarian is according to legal administration requirements when such cases occur. – The letter was sent to him on 21December 2011.

“Last year, the legal administration wrote to my office requesting to lift the immunity on Mr. Puoric Matuong – He is going to answer the allegations of child abduction raised against him by a citizen,” the speaker said.

Marik explained that the Lakes State interim constitution article 65 sub-article 2 may waive the immunity of any member who commits any crime and to face the court if required.

Speaking to the press while in custody at Rumbek central police station, the accused, Mr. Zechariah Puoric Matuong dismissed accusations for having abducted the child as baseless – He affirmed that the child is his biological son.

“My son who was in Kampala for 10 years with his mother called me and I decided to let him come visit us but someone reported that I have abducted a child from Kampala, that isn’t true," Puoric decried.

Puoric explained that the child was coming from Kampala to visit him as his father as well as to see his entire relatives in Rumbek.

This is the first time the Lakes State parliament had lifted the immunity of a honourable member since its inception on May 2010 after the 48 members won the April General Election.

I may assume," this is a mere lie." Those who are behind this accusation might be pursuing a plotical agenda to tarned the image of Hon. Zacheria Puoric politically. I believe it is a lie because there is no record of child abduction in the history of entire Lakes state communities as well as the whole of the greater Bahr el Gazal. This has never been and will never be. I hope the true justice will prevail in this case of Zacheria not like last year controversal law which convicted and sentenced many youths of Lakes state on the ground of under age girls impregnation which was not in conformity with international justice standard nor that of the South Sudan as a whole.
