NYIROL, 18th January 2012 [Gurtong] - The Commissioner of Nyirol County in Jonglei State Isaac Kuach Duoth has reported that early this week, suspected Murle youths attacked the Wich-Deng village killing 13 people and raiding 4,000 herds of cattle.

The cattle were immediately recovered by Lou-Nuer youths while pursuing the attackers just a few miles away from Nyirol County territory. He said the attackers were moving towards Pibor County and they were very few in number making the Lou-Nuer youths to overpower them hence taking the cows to custody.

He explained that the humanitarian situation in the area is now worse because of the high number of displaced families. There is urgent need for humanitarian intervention for services such as shelter, medical assistance, water and food.

"There is an outbreak of the diseases in the area like Malaria and Meningitis according to the internally displaced persons," the Commissioner of Nyirol revealed.

The commissioner is now requesting government authorities to carry out an assessment in the areas where displaced people live.

"I therefore wish to request the State and NGOs to assess the areas of Waat and Walgak in order to know the displaced persons' living conditions. I think those displaced people will not return to their villages within the dry season," Kuach said.

“The SPLA and paramilitary police who are responsible for disarmament have not informed me about the disarmament processes in the County and I hope the government will inform us when the process is due for proper preparations.” the Commissioner said.
