BOR, 5th February 2012 [©Gurtong] - The Jonglei State Ministry of Education is merging the two secondary schools of Malek and Bor leaving other schools allocated 30 miles away from Bor town. Mr. Dau John Guort the acting headmaster of Malek secondary school disclosed.
“Some challenges will face us in the near future,” Mr. Dau said and continued that, “we will have no Language of instruction between the 2 schools since we are using different languages, Malek secondary is using South Sudan curriculum while Bor Secondary is using Sudan curriculum. Rules and regulations between the 2 schools will also be another challenge,” he added.
He gave an example of having a joint timetable between the 2 schools, “one of the students came late one day and a school teacher disciplined him; but they were not communicating due to language barriers,” he elaborated.
Dau explained that the State Minister of Education said that both schools will be merged under the name Bor secondary school but the two will continue operating as Malek track and Bor track and under one administration headed by one headmaster for the period of 3 years.
The Minister also told them that there is going to be a deputy head-teacher from each school. Malek secondary is due to be constructed according to President Salva Kiir’s 100 days development plan.
Meanwhile, Malek secondary school is still having questions on the new management system. For instance, what stamp will the two schools and the headmaster use to authorise a process? And what name shall the school use while having any presentation or events?
In that sense it may not be applicable for the two schools to come together into one administrative system.
In the year 2005, the Jonglei State government combined Bor, Malek and Nile Progressive secondary schools as Malek secondary school due to lack of resources and in the same time, Malek and Nile progressive schools were using English while Bor was using Arabic language for instruction.
Historically, the primacy was constructed in 1978 for Malek secondary school when it was established to be a secondary school before the civil war erupted in Bor and its Primary school was in Malek; an ordinary place 30 miles away from Bor town.
Eventually during the war it was used as military operation zone. In 1997 it was reopened as Bor secondary and renamed again in 1999 as El-Mahadin secondary school untill 2005.
