TORIT, 04 May 2012 [Gurtong] – The State Malaria Control Program Coordinator Dr Benedict Otwari Oller told Gurtong that distribution of mosquito nets to pregnant women, lactating mothers women and children under 5 years is underway.

He has called for concerted efforts from every household to fight malaria by boosting cleanliness in homesteads.

“Malaria accounts for 60 percent of deaths in this state, with 1,400 cases reported monthly. It is therefore incumbent upon each of us to ensure that we keep it at bay. We have 15,000 treated mosquito nets to distribute to households”, he said.

“My Ministry’s policy seeks to combat malaria through early treatment to reduce mortality rate”, he said.

Dr Otwari at the same time decried lack of enough trained medical personnel to assist in reducing the mortality rate in the state.

Newly appointed State Health Minister Dr Margaret Itto called for individual and collective efforts to combat the killer disease.

Addressing the public on World Malaria Day celebrations in Torit Dr Itto appealed to the public officials and partners to boot awareness.
