UN Issues Red Alert on Economic Crisis in South Sudan
South Sudan faces increasing security, economic and humanitarian challenges.

BOR, 09 July 2012 [Gurtong] –A new report by the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) says that the 1-year-old nation is grappling with a number of developmental challenges.
The head of the UN Mission, Special Representative to Secretary-General Hilde Johnson said that it has been a tough start for the people of South Sudan.
“Looking back the last year has clearly been a difficult one for the country and for the people of South Sudan with a number of challenges for the government and for the people”, Johnson said.
She said South Sudan had made progress in several areas and the government should address the communal violence and tensions at the border areas where the people are experiencing greater economic hardships.
She said UNMISS contributed in supporting a peace conference in Jonglei to end the ethnic tension between the Lou-Nuer, Murle and Dinka communities.
Johnson said the Mission was taking stock of its first year of their mandate, which has since been extended to 15 July 2013.
