YEI, 11 July 2012 [Gurtong] – Speaking to hundreds of residents gathered at Yei Freedom Square to celebrate the first anniversary of the independence of South Sudan, the Commissioner congratulated the people of Yei and South Sudan for the great achievement of independence.

Augustine expressed concern about the low pay for the teachers and medical staffs, adding that there has been an increase in enrolment which has reduced the illiteracy gap in the country.

The Commissioner said that the freedom was attained at a cost, saying the liberation struggle claimed many lives, leaving many widows, widowers and orphans.

He called upon the county residents to work hard to defend South Sudan against any foreign aggression on its territory.

Augustine added that the shutdown of oil production should not cause worry as the government is in process of getting an alternative for the exportation of oil to the world market.

“People should take up national reconstruction in order to achieve social, economic and political independence. I urge everyone to use land for investments in a legal way and desist from tribalism”, said Augustine.

A resident of Yei who spoke to Gurtong expressed great satisfaction with the celebration and appealed to the government to support agricultural projects, education, and health.

Hundreds of people including students, pupils, business men, religious leaders, organised forces, MPs  from the  Central Equatoria State and National Assembly turned up for the celebrations.
