JUBA, 02August 2012 [Gurtong]-Speaking during the national celebrations to mark the Martyrs’ Day at Dr John Garang Mausoleum in Juba, the President warned that tribalism will divide the new nation.

“We in South Sudan should move out of the ideology of tribalism and divide and rule policy”, he said.

The President strongly cautioned against tribalism, saying the activities of the country’s main opposition political party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement for Democratic Change promote tribalism.

Kiir assured widows and widowers of the martyrs of continuous support and urged the Commission of Wounded Heroes, Widows and Orphans to improve on policies that enable provision of basic services to its members.

The President reiterated his government’s determination to overcome the economic hardships resulting from the oil production shutdown early this year.

“Let me assure you people that we are not going to fail. We will survive”, said Kiir.

He said the austerity measures are not permanent and added that the budget is geared towards the survival of the country.

The day is marked in commemoration of all those who sacrificed and lost their lives to realise freedom and peace in South Sudan.

Over 2.5 million South Sudanese are reported to have died and at least four million others were displaced during the over two decades of civil war that ended with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreementin 2005.

This year’s Martyrs’ Day is the second commemoration after South Sudan gained her independence in 2011.
