World AIDS Day 2012 Celebrations to be Held in Torit

The National HIV/AIDs Commission in collaboration with the Eastern Equatoria state government through its State Commission and State Ministry of Health is preparing for the World HIV/AIDs Day scheduled to take place on 01 December in Torit.

The National HIV/AIDs Commission’s Chairperson Dr. Esterina Novello Nyilok has announced that this year’s national celebrations will be marked at Torit in Eastern Equatoria State.

 Prior to Austerity Measure Budget, the 2012’s HIV/AIDs budget allocation to cater for celebration in the ten states was 1 Million South Sudanese Pounds (SSP) but was cut forces to SSP 560,000 to be divided and sent to all the 10 states.

 She said the day is to create public awareness on the deadly disease.

 “We propose the state government could get 50 soldiers from every organized force to march during the marking of the event and the commission will support them,” she said.

 The State Deputy Governor, Jerome Gama Surur welcomed the delegation to the state saying HIV/AIDS is a cross cutting issue where all the ministries must participate in awareness and control.
 
He urges the state ministry and commission to be on forefront in organization and work hard to ensure preparations leading to celebrations are accelerated accordingly.
 
 Apart from creating general awareness about threat of the HIV/AIDs to the country, the Nyilok disclosed that the mandate of the commission is to develop appropriate policies and strategies aimed at combating the spread of the disease.

She confirmed that her commission's part mandate is to increase awareness campaigns through partners, mainstreaming HIV/AIDS into line ministries, planning and policy formulation, supporting the civil society organizations on HIV/AIDS programs.
 
The commission as parts of the programs carries out monitoring and evaluation on HIV/AIDS apart from implementing program on prevention and Care Program on cross borders population.
 
The commission’s strategic framework as well Monitoring and Evaluation framework is among the key Documents of the Commission of whom officials are guided to work toward behavioral change of the citizens across the country.
