Catholic Church across South celebrate Gasi Abangite in Yambio

YAMBIO, Dec 9 (Gurtong) – Luminaries from across South Sudan’s Catholic Church attended 50th anniversary celebration of priestly ordination of the Bishop of Tombura, Yambio Diocese, Joseph Gasi Abangite. They included the first Sudanese Cardinal, Gabriel Cardinal Wako and three bishops from Juba, Torit and Yei.

Hundreds of Christians turned up under the shadow of the trees or the ‘Green cathedral’ in Yambio.

Rumbek Secondary School celebrates 60 year anniversary

RUMBEK, 31 Dec (Gurtong) – Former students, including notable political leaders, of Rumbek’s famous secondary school were just some of those attending a 60 year anniversary celebration on Sunday in the Lakes State capital.

Gasi who was born in 1928, became a priest in 1957 and spent 32 years as a bishop since he was consecrated in 1975 together with Msgr. Pio Yukwan and Cardinal G. Zubeir Wako in Juba.

Gasi is remembered for the time he taught the cardinal in Rumbek, and for teaching English language for two years in the class of John Garang.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit sent a letter to the celebration, and a sum of 20,000 Sudanese pounds through the GOSS minister of Social Welfare and Religious Affairs, Mary Kiden.
