JUBA, 23 February 2013 [Gurtong] - The money was approved by the Council of Ministers after deliberations yesterday in Juba.

“The Council has passed for this 2014 population census it is about $92million US Dollars. And this thing is actually going to be done in phase starting from the training phase until it reaches registration phase,” Hon. Madut Biar Yel, Acting government Spokesperson told the press yesterday.

He said government will fund part of the money and lobby partners for the rest. The Ministry of Finance and the Census Commission is yet to sit in a meeting to iron out on how government should fund the budget.

Last week, UN Deputy Special Envoy to South Sudan Toby Lanzer described the conduct of the census “crucial” and said the process may need cooperated efforts to achieve its success.

Underlining the importance of the census, Toby said it will enable all partners and the government to get a competent demographic profile of the country, enables better planning and programming of policies, monitors and measures results much better.

South Sudan is scheduled to hold its first national census next year with the process being championed by the National Bureau of Statistics Commission midst critical political and economic challenges facing the nation.

Government is yet battling with the amendment of the transitional constitution ahead of expected elections to be held in 2015.

It extended mandate of the Constitutional Review Commission early this year after failing to fund the Commission due to critical financial challenges affected by the shutdown of oil production last year.
