Million For A Bride-what Do You Think?  (Australia) (131.217.6.2)
This topic may have been discussed before but that doesn't make it less appealing to me.Throw in your argument please.
Talk for or against this exaggerated tradition.Almost every one likes to proudly pay the bride price, but million?
I am like thinking in the 21ist century.

Thanks.

Jakor,
It wouldn't be good to have a girl whom the parents spent for for free. Some appreciatory pay is necessary but not a million.

Thanks for contributing.

Re:  (Australia) (137.92.97.7)
I think the tradition of paying dowry is a good one. It is an appreciation to the parents and the family of the girl as mentioned. It is also a way of building relationships between members of the two clans that are involved as the traditon is that everyone is involved in contributing to the dowry and dicision making.

The western type of marriages is not very good. You pay nothing but at the end of the day there is no sense of community. There is nothing that really binds the two married people except love and I am not sure if that really exist in all marriage relationships. Once the love is dead the marriage sadly breaks up. Divorce is the order of the day in the west.

In the African traditions, divorce is very difficault if not impossible. The reason for this is that marriage is a community concern and the community ensures as much as possible marriages remain together. Why? Because the family is the backbone of the community and any breakdown in the family is like the community is disintegrating.

Dowry was seen as a sign of the man and his family appreciating the girl's family. It was seen as a gift and when you give a gift, you give what you can afford not what other people want you to offer. This is where our problem is today. The girl's family wants to make sure they make the most of the marriage because probably this is going to be the only way to become a bit wealthy as the war has distoryed our economy. This understanding has made the community to change its thinking about the old tradition that dowry is a gift. In fact in the past some people got married without paying anything if they are worthy.

I think our communities need to rethink what marriages are all about after all the millions that are paid don't make anyone any richer. The people who pay this much must also think about others and not turn a good tradition into and auction!
