Northern Bahr el Ghazal

The State Ministry of Health (SMOH), Northern Bahr El Ghazal provides leadership for the health sector in the State and takes a leading role in delivering health services to the people of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State. The management and provision of health services in South Sudan has been decentralized with the SMoH and County Health Departments (CHDs) taking the lead in delivery and management of health services.

Northern Bahr el Ghazal State has two medical institutions. Aweil Health Science Training Institute for clinical officers, nursing and midwifery established in 2015. It has enrolled more than 120 students for the 2015/2016. There is also a nursing college within the state hospital which was established in early 2005.

The state hospital has three wards, a Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) centre, casualty and emergency centre as well as a pharmacy.

The state has a police hospital which also provides quality health services to the state residents.

International non-governmental organisations such as MSF France, ARC and ACF are integrated into the Northern Bahr el State Hospital where they are playing crucial vital roles and supplementing delivery of health services at the hospital.

The State Ministry of Health oversees a total of 5 County Health Departments (CHD) and 116 health facilities which are categorised according to the level and counties of the catchment areas.

Below is a description of each of the facilities:

Aweil East County: The County health department is in charge of health services delivery at the county and reports to the State Ministry of Health. Aweil East has one hospital that is also the county referral facility. It has 5 Primary health care centres (PHCC) and 28 primary health care units. The number of staff vary from the level of health services. The Basic Package Health Services of South Sudan (BPHS) puts the number of staff at the PHCC at 21, most of who include classified and unclassified staff.

Aweil North: The County does not have a County hospital but 5 Primary health care centres and 24 Primary health care units.

Aweil West: The County has 2 hospitals and 5 Primary health care centres and 28 Primary health care units.

Aweil South:  The County has 1 county hospital located in Malek alel run by South Sudan Church of Christ. It has 1 Primary health care centre and 10 primary health care units.
Aweil Centre:  The County has 4 primary health care centres and 8 primary health care units.
