Sudan as a whole has more than two hundred ethnic groups that speak different languages and dialects. Many of these are found are found within South Sudan and sometimes across borders such as that of  Ethiopia, Uganda, Congo and Central African Republic.

The communities have different cultural practices that are exhibited through various forms such as the arts (music, cultural fashion, literature and sports).

South Sudanese practice traditional beliefs, Christianity as well as Islam.

The signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005 provided a conducive atmosphere for the advancement of culture through such activities as beauty pageants (South Sudan Miss Malaika, cultural performances and workshops).
